Here are 10 Life Principles that can change the face of your life and business if you just put them into practice.

Recently I attended a business convention and was treated to a speech by Nic Vujicic.  Maybe his name does not ring a bell, but he is known for his motivational speaking. He was born with a rare condition that resulted in him having no arms or legs.  He has an amazing story that is so worth listening to.  As he spoke, you could feel the positive energy in the room, but overwhelming sadness was felt as well as he spoke of how difficult it was to grow up without limbs.

Needless to say, it was the highlight of the business trip for me and I can’t wait to share the nuggets of wisdom he shared with us that day.  Now, many of the things I will list are not new to you and me.   I think just hearing these words from him and through his perspective, made me see through a different lens.

10 Life Principles

  • Attitude of Gratitude ~ Life Principle #1

We have heard this so many times, it really is not rocket science to understand that what we focus on is really what we will receive more of.  Hence the principle of focusing on having our attitude to always come from a place of gratitude.

To hear Nic speak of this and know what his background is and to see him in his physical condition, it really does put the statement into a new perspective.  How often do we mumble and complain about so many things in our lives or businesses without taking much into account of how blessed we really are?

“If you put your happiness in temporary things, your happiness will be temporary.”   Nic Vujicic

  • When you don’t get a miracle, be one. ~ Life Principle #2

This was one that really hit home for me.  Here I was listening to a man that as a child asked why he couldn’t be like everyone else.  Why couldn’t the doctors give him arms and legs….it tore at my heart.  I could see him in my mind as a child asking these questions.  The pain as a parent knowing that there was nothing you could do to change his plight.

Sometimes it takes someone outside of ourselves to see our purpose.  This is what happened to Nic.  The janitor at his school saw his potential.  He encouraged him to become a speaker.  Nic did not see this path for himself right away but with encouragement, he decided to try.

He knew how it was to be bullied in school and could speak to other kids about bullying.  He has a much wider message today than he did at age 17 when he did his first speaking engagement to 10 people.  But no matter if he was speaking on bullying to high school students or talking to grown adults about self-worth, his message is equally powerful.  He did not receive a miracle of limbs but he has shared powerful words with others that have created miracles in their lives.

“When you loose your sense of purpose, you lose your sense of life.”   Nic Vujicic

  • You don’t know what you can achieve until you try  ~ Life Principle #3

  • When you fail, try again ~ Life Principle #4

These two really work together.  For if you don’t keep trying,  you will never know what you are truly capable of achieving. Many of us stop just short of reaching our goals, don’t we?  We get discouraged and throw in the towel.  Can you imagine how many times he had to practice to be able to learn how to swim?  How many times he just about drown before he was able to get the hang of it?  Imagine the freedom he has created for himself by learning how to do the many things he has learned to do.

  • Obstacles are opportunities.~ Life Principle #5

Many times we see things all wrong, don’t we??  We live in a world that is quick to let you know there is an obstacle in your way.  They are quick to be negative.  We, often times, are quick to be negative as well.  The great leaders and successful people in life also see the obstacle. But since they see through a different lens, they see the opportunity as well. For every obstacle there is an opportunity.  It comes down to mindset and how you see things.  If your mindset is about achieving the goal, then you will turn the obstacle into your advantage.  You will turn it into opportunity.

“Obstacles do not block the path, they are the path.”   Anonymous

  • Failure is Education ~ Life Principle #6

Failure is something we all try to avoid, don’t we?  As a society, we have deemed failure as something we cannot possibly find good in.  But on the contrary, failure is where you will learn the most.  Through failure you will grow the most.  Failure is the most fertile ground you can learn in.  It will help develop strength, character and insight.

“Never get discouraged if you fail. Learn from it. Keep trying.”   Thomas Edison

  • Dream Big ~ Life Principle #7

Are you dreaming BIG enough?  Do you set your goals high enough?  It is easy to set a goal just outside of what we KNOW we can reach and be satisfied when we accomplish it.  To set a goal even bigger, now that can put us out of our comfort zone, can’t it?  Setting our goals outside of what we think we can achieve is exactly what we SHOULD do.

It will force us to stretch.  Make us get out of our comfort zone and in turn help us to grow. Don’t settle for what you know can be done.  Challenge yourself to reach beyond, to become more than you can see for yourself right now.

The problem isn’t that I think so highly of myself. It is just that you think so little of yourself. Live life BIG, BOLD and OUT LOUD!”  Shannon L Alder

  • You don’t need more before you can do more ~ Life Principle #8

Have you ever thought “When I make  ____ amount of money I will be able to give to______.”  Or “When I complete this project I will begin to volunteer for _______.”  Why wait, why not begin now?  Why wait til _____ amount of money is acquired? Do you not think you are worthy to help others now?

Why not start small……. Smile to a passerby, look someone in the eye when you say “thank you”.  Why not give hugs away like they are candy?  These are all things that the world has a deficit of and will cost you nothing to give but will mean so much to the other person.  Start a “Pay if forward” campaign in your community.  Check into local charities that need small, under the radar things done.  There will always be a need for kindness, so be that person and don’t wait for someday to arrive.

A life without cause is a life without effect.”   Barbarella

  • Stop getting stuck on why things that worked before don’t work now ~ Life Principle #9

Think about all the companies that kept doing things the same old way that are now longer in business.  BLOCKBUSTER, Toys”R”Us just to name a couple.  They were so sure that what they had been doing would still work in this new economy but where are they now?  Part of being a business owner is being in tune with the changing times.  To be willing to ask how you can do things better.  Don’t get so hung up on why things that worked in the past no longer even apply.

Either be willing to always be looking ahead or surround yourself with those that can help you see the changes coming and help adapt as needed.  Try to not be stuck on “This is how we have always done it, so this is how we will do it” thinking.

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”   John F. Kennedy

  • Attitude is Altitude ~ Life Principle #10

Attitude is everything.  A bad attitude will get you nowhere.  A good attitude will get you anywhere.  YOU are ultimately in control of your success or failure and it all begins with your attitude. Stop blaming your upbringing, your parents, your lack of funds, your lack of education, you current work situation ….the list can keep on going.  Everyone has something in their life that didn’t go the way they wanted or even the way that it should have.  We all have had obstacles arise that seemed like Mt Everest.  No one will be spared in this thing called LIFE.

Those that see they are ultimately in control by how they respond to life are the ones that win.  They are the ones that we may think have no problems.  The ones that look like they probably had a silver spoon since birth.  The difference between them and you….Their Attitude.

Attitude…

involves having the attitude of gratitude.   Becoming their own miracle and deciding to see what they could really achieve and when they failed, they tried again. They chose to see their obstacles as an opportunities.  Failures became their classroom to becoming the best. Dreaming big became a way to break, no more like shatter their goals.  Giving back was something they did from day one.  They were always reinventing.  Always willing to create and not wait for things to change but to create the change.

“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”    Steve Jobs

Applying these life principles will not only help you in life but in business as well.  Don’t just survive, thrive and become the person your were created to be.
